First opening its doors in 1879, The Royal was once considered the centre of social life in Picton and the jewel of the County. After falling into disrepair after years of neglect, the building was purchased by Greg Sorbara in 2013, who saw the potential to restore the historic property into a landmark destination.

After a 9-year, brick-by-brick restoration, the heritage-designated property re-opened in May 2022, modernized and transformed to its former glory by Giannone Petricone Associates and ERA Architects, with landscape architecture by Janet Rosenberg & Studio. With 28 rooms, two restaurants, a series of connected garden terraces, outdoor rooftop lounge and an interior lounge with event capacity to serve up to 150 guests, the lovingly rebuilt Royal Hotel reflects and honours its rich and storied 140-year history. It welcomes guests and the community to a unique experience deeply rooted in history and place that draws on local artisans and food and wine grown in the County.

The design by JRS reimagines the 6,488 sq ft landscape of the boutique hotel, transforming a tired asphalt parking area into four innovative outdoor ‘rooms’: an upper dining terrace, a lower lounge terrace, an outdoor bar, and a swimming pool. Remarkable design resolution was achieved by an involved and collaborative design process that saw the team draw every brick. Filled with custom elements, the landscape is rendered in a mix of refined and industrial elements; weathering steel and raw timber meet with finely crafted masonry and custom metalwork. The design blends heritage and contemporary aesthetics with meticulous attention to detail and innovative use of materials.

The upper dining terrace seamlessly connects to the hotel’s award-winning restaurant and features natural stone paving and pleached London plane trees, trained in the nursery to form a geometric canopy, as a backdrop. The lounge terrace on the lower level features brick in many forms: a custom paving pattern, a detailed brick lattice wall with fireplace hearth, and surrounding enclosure walls topped with custom woodwork. Other timber elements include a custom banquette with integrated planting and custom handrails. Naturalized planting inspired by native species of Prince Edward County frame the space, while Oak trees in soil cells provide summer shade.

The new swimming pool and terrace feature a bespoke brick privacy wall with a detailed wood lattice screen, platform day beds with shade umbrellas, and an integrated double-sided fireplace feature. Two custom and unique water jet-cut metal gates provide privacy and access to the space. Parametric tools were used to turn an image of tree branches from a heritage photograph of a picturesque Ontario landscape into the gate’s intricate, geometric perforated pattern.

A cohesive public realm strategy ties the site and surrounding public areas together through materiality and upgraded walkways, adjacent alleyways, and a public mews connecting the street to parking behind the hotel. JRS coordinated the streetscape and alleyway reconstruction, adding paving, planting, and lighting.

A shining example of innovative, thoughtful, and detailed landscape renewal, the Royal Hotel is now an enormously popular, award-winning destination inspired by place attracting both tourists and locals alike.

Le Royal Hôtel, dans la ville historique de Picton, dans le Prince Edward County (PEC), réinvente une propriété hôtelière victorienne emblématique en tant que pivot de la vie communautaire.
