It connects with some of the major cultural destinations in the city, and helps to integrate communities of local residents along the way.

The structure is separated into 3 multi-functional levels, which are a skybridge, various ground floor outdoor spaces, and an underground commercial area. As the Baywalk interconnects with destinations such as Sports Arena, Library, malls, office buildings and cultural parks, Baywalk becomes the direct shuttle passage to reach those destinations for users arriving from public transport.

Baywalk is split into 8 zones, each zone having its own architectural design language and, at the neighbouring areas, the surrounding environment provides distinctive characteristics. The nature of Baywalk is its simple integration of everyday routines; a user friendly, relatable area providing a casual, relaxing space that can provide versatility for everyone. And with the diverse activities that can happen in these spaces, it immediately becomes a personal experience for everyone visiting the site.

The analysis of the users’ experience immediately sets the design direction for us to develop a clear identity that can represent the whole site, yet at the same time to be recognisable to each zone. By inputting different elements such as the silhouette property of the site, we were able to develop both the logo and a strategy to deliver a clear branding structure and image to the site’s wayfinding.

Brief

We were asked to provide a clear branding image that can be conveyed through the logo and wayfinding methodology. With the project spanning across district areas, we had to provide a unified signage structure that notifies users which zone they are in, a clear mind mapping on what can be offered nearby and educating them on how to navigate the long Baywalk. As well as integrating cultural information that is unique to the area, our signage needed to respond to the different architectural styles and yet seamlessly integrate with other design features (such as the hand rails).

Design Solution

We wanted to explore a single element that could symbolise the site and that could also be flexibly applied into the 8 zones for mind mapping. As the project positioning was about connection and the community of people and nature converging into the space, we adopted a circle as our base motif. The circle feature was implemented to deliver a wholeness and harmony, as well as supporting thee physical silhouette of Baywalk and its connections to the major city destinations.

As a zoning strategy, we were given a clear structure to assign an alphabetical letter as zone naming to each site; by analysing the different properties of each neighbouring area we were able to identify and assign an appropriate colour aspect as a zoning colour along the Baywalk according to the mood, emotions of these places and their users. With the circle shape as the main design framework and the 2 zoning elements combined, we were able to strengthen the brand image, accentuate the wayfinding, and add liveliness and excitement into the users’ everyday walk on the Baywalk.
