The Carrefour d\u2019apprentissage is one of the most attractive central spaces. It stands out for its flexibility, the integration of socializing, reading and animation spaces, as well as a collaborative workspace, where the integrated furniture has been carefully thought out to meet the needs of students.<\/p>\n<p>In order to bring natural light into the heart of the corridors, which are usually darker, the team paid particular attention to the layout and installation of skilfully positioned interior glazing, enabling second-day lighting. Fa\u00e7ade glazing was maximized, complemented by glazed partitions, visual openings between rooms and in niches. Our aim was to create an environment that was as bright and fluid as possible. Thus, links and openings between the large central gathering spaces and the west side of the corridors were reinforced on each floor, to take full advantage of the afternoon sun.<\/p>\n<p>The interior spaces were generously enriched with wood to create a warm, bright and welcoming atmosphere, encouraging cognitive activities and concentration. The integration of this natural material was fundamental to the design. In addition, this material was used in an innovative way as a unifying element in the design of the corridors, in the form of a flexible ribbon. This conceptual approach transformed the initially austere corridors into dynamic, inviting strolling galleries. The birch plywood ribbon adopts different shapes and angles, harmoniously following the ceiling and flooring design lines. It frames classroom entrances or used as a bench, wall recess, niche and more. This creates a succession of varied spaces adapted to different uses along the corridor: locker areas, interaction spaces, corners for sitting, reading, writing ideas on walls, disseminating information, and so on. Finally, the corridors are embellished with an easy-care, natural maple ceiling covering, which helps to attenuate ambient noise while adding a touch of sophistication.<\/p>\n<p>When it came to the application of color, we drew inspiration from the color wheel, which is an integral notion in students\u2019 elementary school learning. In this way, the circle\u2019s twelve colors were grouped into four ranges that were applied to the school\u2019s four floors. This helped to differentiate each level, with wood as the unifying element. Finally, the staircases and their accesses are systematically clad in yellow. As a result, they remain a common landmark throughout the building to accentuate their visibility and make it easier to locate exits, which can prove vital during emergency evacuations.<\/p>\n<p>In keeping with the desire to maximize natural lighting, classrooms feature fairly high ceilings. Round acoustic clouds suspended from the ceiling at different heights help absorb noise while making the space dynamic. The interplay between colored ceilings and white clouds creates an energizing contrast, establishing a vibrant environment in these places of learning.<\/p>\n<p>Heritage preservation, already mentioned, has also led to the preservation and highlighting of remarkable interior features such as the old hot-water radiators, which bear witness to the building\u2019s history. To remedy their energy-hungry nature, we cleverly transformed them into electric baseboard heaters by replacing the water with a heating cable. This conversion enabled more efficient heating management, segmenting the building and avoiding the need to maintain a constant temperature throughout.<\/p>\n<p>Because of the large surface area of the schoolyard and mechanical room, we took the opportunity of bringing the building up to standard to integrate a geothermal system. This solution for regulating building temperature brings various advantages such as energy savings, a reduced carbon footprint, reliability, versatility and reduced dependence on fossil fuels. This economically and environmentally beneficial choice is primarily aimed at ensuring occupant comfort.<\/p>\n<p>Externally, the schoolyard has been designed to extend the educational experience, offering functional yet playful green spaces that encourage physical activity and ecological learning. Street furniture and color choices were carefully harmonized with the interior environment. In addition, a water retention basin was integrated to promote sustainable management of water resources, prevent flooding and protect water quality, making this development an essential element of urban and environmental infrastructure.<\/p>\n<p>Finally, we are delighted to have been able to create an ideal environment that fosters student learning and development. Our efforts focused on rehabilitating the building envelope, deinstitutionalizing the educational environment and developing coherent exteriors. We preserved the site\u2019s heritage and applied sustainable development principles at every stage of the design process. The result is remarkable. Ce projet majeur consiste en un r\u00e9am\u00e9nagement complet des am\u00e9nagements sur 5591 m<sup>2<\/sup>, dans un b\u00e2timent initialement construit dans les ann\u00e9es 1920, de la restauration de l\u2019enveloppe ext\u00e9rieure, de la toiture, de la fondation, des portes et fen\u00eatres. Les divisions int\u00e9rieures ont \u00e9t\u00e9 r\u00e9interpr\u00e9t\u00e9es, les espaces int\u00e9rieurs, y compris les salles de classe et les bureaux, ont \u00e9t\u00e9 r\u00e9nov\u00e9s et adapt\u00e9s aux nouveaux besoins. Tout ceci a pu se r\u00e9aliser gr\u00e2ce au dialogue entre notre \u00e9quipe d\u2019architectes investis et \u00e0 notre client r\u00e9ceptif, le Centre de service scolaire de Montr\u00e9al.<\/p>\n<p>Consciente de l\u2019importance de pr\u00e9server l\u2019authenticit\u00e9 et l\u2019esth\u00e9tique du patrimoine, notre \u00e9quipe a plaid\u00e9 en faveur d\u2019une restauration compl\u00e8te de l\u2019enveloppe. Pour ce faire, les r\u00e9novations ont \u00e9volu\u00e9 vers une approche globale de la restauration de l\u2019enveloppe ext\u00e9rieure en ma\u00e7onnerie, permettant \u00e0 la fois une r\u00e9novation coh\u00e9rente et respectueuse du caract\u00e8re historique du b\u00e2timent, tout en assurant sa p\u00e9rennit\u00e9 et en r\u00e9pondant aux normes contemporaines. L\u2019uniformisation des fa\u00e7ades et la pr\u00e9servation de leur int\u00e9grit\u00e9 visuelle ont \u00e9t\u00e9 permises par le rejointoiement int\u00e9gral de la ma\u00e7onnerie gr\u00e2ce \u00e0 une conception de la r\u00e9fection qui a \u00e9t\u00e9 pens\u00e9e et adapt\u00e9e afin d\u2019\u00e9viter tout effet de raccommodage. L\u2019expertise conjugu\u00e9e de notre \u00e9quipe et des ma\u00e7ons a \u00e9t\u00e9 cruciale pour obtenir ce r\u00e9sultat harmonieux.<\/p>\n<p>Nous sommes convaincus que la cr\u00e9ation d\u2019espaces dynamiques, flexibles et lumineux a un impact positif sur l\u2019apprentissage des enfants au sein de milieux \u00e9ducatifs. C\u2019est pourquoi l\u2019apport de lumi\u00e8re naturelle dans le b\u00e2timent \u00e9tait un enjeu primordial pour les concepteurs, tout comme la cr\u00e9ation d\u2019un environnement sain. L\u2019am\u00e9nagement et la r\u00e9interpr\u00e9tation des divisions int\u00e9rieures ont \u00e9t\u00e9 r\u00e9alis\u00e9s avec pour objectif de fournir un milieu de qualit\u00e9. Des espaces spacieux et bien ventil\u00e9s ont \u00e9t\u00e9 planifi\u00e9s, tout comme des salles polyvalentes et des zones \u00e0 usages multiples, favorisant une utilisation vari\u00e9e. To this end, the renovations evolved towards a comprehensive approach to the restoration of the exterior masonry envelope, enabling both a coherent renovation that respects the historic character of the building, while ensuring its durability and meeting contemporary standards. The uniformity of the facades and the preservation of their visual integrity were achieved by the full repointing of the masonry, thanks to a refurbishment design that was thought out and adapted to avoid any mending effect.
