in 1937 in the wake of an unprecedented economic crisis, Snowdon Cinema marked the return of the seventh art to Montreal, offering an escape and leisure activity that residents had not enjoyed for many years. For nearly 50 years, and through some of the greatest cinematic masterpieces of the 20th century, this Art Deco-style cinema designed by Daniel John Crighton and adorned by Emmanuel Briffa was the main witness to the awe-inspired gazes, tears, and hearty laughter of a faithful and ever-growing audience. After hosting its final screening in 1982, it became a shopping center and then a gym, until its permanent closure and abandonment. Durant pr\u00e8s de 50 ans, et \u00e0 travers quelques uns des plus grands chefs d\u2019\u0153uvre cin\u00e9matographiques du XXe si\u00e8cle, ce cin\u00e9ma de style Art-D\u00e9co con\u00e7u par Daniel John Crighton et habill\u00e9 par Emmanuel Briffa aura \u00e9t\u00e9 le principal t\u00e9moin des regards \u00e9bahis, des larmes et des rires \u00e9clatants d\u2019un public fid\u00e8le et toujours plus passionn\u00e9. Apr\u00e8s avoir accueilli sa derni\u00e8re s\u00e9ance en 1982, il devint centre commercial puis salle de sport, jusqu\u2019\u00e0 sa fermeture d\u00e9finitive puis son abandon. Celui qui avait fait d\u00e9couvrir Chaplin aux Montr\u00e9alais fut m\u00eame incendi\u00e9 en 2016 et passa \u00e0 deux doigts d\u2019\u00eatre d\u00e9truit apr\u00e8s avoir \u00e9t\u00e9 rachet\u00e9 par la Ville. Propuls\u00e9 de nouveau sous les feux des projecteurs, le Th\u00e9\u00e2tre Snowdon se voit offrir une seconde vie en accueillant un public r\u00e9solument contemporain auquel il offre d\u00e9sormais une soixantaine de logements.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pour les architectes, le principal enjeu fut de pr\u00e9server l\u2019identit\u00e9 de cet octog\u00e9naire qui a travers\u00e9 tant d\u2019\u00e9poques,<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">tout en changeant drastiquement son usage, en adaptant son enveloppe (pr\u00e9c\u00e9demment herm\u00e9tique) et l\u2019ouvrant sur l\u2019ext\u00e9rieur, cr\u00e9ant ainsi des espaces de vie lumineux, agr\u00e9ables.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Travailler la notion de cin\u00e9ma implique la conception d\u2019un b\u00e2timent comme d\u2019un \u00e9l\u00e9ment de spectacle autonome. De jour, tel un \u00e9cran r\u00e9fl\u00e9chissant, l\u2019agrandissement refl\u00e8te l\u2019infatigable valse urbaine. Il s\u2018offre au spectateur et fait miroiter le ciel. Sobre et l\u00e9ger, cet ajout, en suspension au-dessus du Th\u00e9\u00e2tre Snowdon, le met en sc\u00e8ne plut\u00f4t que de lui faire de l\u2019ombrage. De nuit, sa peau transparente offre un caract\u00e8re totalement diff\u00e9rent ; tel le lever du grand voile, le b\u00e2timent s\u2019ouvre sur la ville et met en lumi\u00e8re des sc\u00e8nes domestiques myst\u00e9rieuses et \u00e9vanescentes. Le b\u00e2timent devenu lumi\u00e8re agit comme un grand phare sur D\u00e9carie, rappelant son pass\u00e9 glorieux et son avenir brillant.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Jouant sur une v\u00e9ritable dualit\u00e9 entre une enveloppe historique imposante et un nouveau volume contemporain, le projet cr\u00e9e une passerelle temporelle qui allie le cachet du patrimoine avec l\u2019esp\u00e9rance de l\u2019avenir, dans un pr\u00e9sent respectueux de son contexte. On y retrouve une dualit\u00e9 temporelle, certes, mais \u00e9galement spatiale, puisqu\u2019il a fallu s\u2019implanter et s\u2019adapter \u00e0 la trame urbaine. En effet, c\u00f4t\u00e9 jardin r\u00e8gne une tranquillit\u00e9 baign\u00e9e de nature, d\u2019horizons verdoyants et d\u2019une vue sublime sur le Mont Royal et l\u2019Oratoire Saint-Joseph tandis que, c\u00f4t\u00e9 cour se trouve un lieu de vie actif et plus passant avec sa circulation (autoroute D\u00e9carie), ses commerces et ses restaurants. Pour cr\u00e9er un dialogue harmonieux, une utilisation judicieuse des mat\u00e9riaux fut fondamentale, notamment en mati\u00e8re d\u2019acoustique o\u00f9 il fallut r\u00e9pondre aux contraintes li\u00e9es au contexte urbain en constante mutation.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dans un souci patrimonial, la fa\u00e7ade art-d\u00e9co a \u00e9t\u00e9 enti\u00e8rement restaur\u00e9e et ram\u00e8ne les composantes originelles. L\u2019isolation des murs de ma\u00e7onnerie et cr\u00e9pis existants est assur\u00e9e par un soufflage performant appliqu\u00e9 sur l\u2019ensemble des murs existants conserv\u00e9s. Une attention particuli\u00e8re f\u00fbt port\u00e9e aux \u00e9l\u00e9ments les plus caract\u00e9ristiques du Th\u00e9\u00e2tre\u00a0: la marquise, l\u2019enseigne Th\u00e9\u00e2tre Snowdon ainsi que les trois bandes noires horizontales, tous conserv\u00e9s et restaur\u00e9s \u00e0 l\u2019identique. Un subtil dialogue avec le nouveau volume plus contemporain s\u2019installe entre ces deux architectures d\u2019\u00e9poques diff\u00e9rentes.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ce lien fort entre les pr\u00e9occupations de notre \u00e9poque et la magie du pass\u00e9 n\u2019a d\u2019ailleurs cess\u00e9 de guider le projet. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Gr\u00e2ce \u00e0 la restauration du th\u00e9\u00e2tre Snowdon \u2013 monument de m\u00e9moire populaire, temple des premiers baisers sucr\u00e9s et maladroits et lieu de rendez-vous pluvieux en famille \u2013 un b\u00e2timent embl\u00e9matique de Montr\u00e9al rena\u00eet des flammes et de l\u2019oubli, offrant \u00e0 ses r\u00e9sidents un v\u00e9ritable pan de son histoire.<\/span><\/p>\n","en":"<p>Born in 1937 in the wake of an unprecedented economic crisis, Snowdon Cinema marked the return of the seventh art to Montreal, offering an escape and leisure activity that residents had not enjoyed for many years. For nearly 50 years, and through some of the greatest cinematic masterpieces of the 20th century, this Art Deco-style cinema designed by Daniel John Crighton and adorned by Emmanuel Briffa was the main witness to the awe-inspired gazes, tears, and hearty laughter of a faithful and ever-growing audience. After hosting its final screening in 1982, it became a shopping center and then a gym, until its permanent closure and abandonment. The cinema that introduced Chaplin to Montrealers was even set ablaze in 2016 and narrowly escaped destruction after being acquired by the city. Thrust back into the spotlight, the Snowdon Theatre is given a second life by welcoming a decidedly contemporary audience, now offering around sixty residential units.<\/p>\n<p>For the architects, the main challenge was to preserve the identity of this octogenarian that had traversed so many eras, while drastically changing its use, adapting its previously hermetic envelope, and opening it up to the outside, thereby creating bright, pleasant living spaces. Working with the concept of cinema involves designing a building as a self-contained spectacle. By day, like a reflective screen, the expansion mirrors the tireless urban ballet. It presents itself to the viewer and gleams with the sky. Simple and light, this addition, suspended above the Snowdon Theatre, stages it rather than casting shade upon it. By night, its transparent skin offers a completely different character; like the lifting of a grand curtain, the building opens onto the city and illuminates mysterious and evanescent domestic scenes. The building, now transformed into light, acts as a beacon on D\u00e9carie, recalling its glorious past and brilliant future.<\/p>\n<p>Playing on a true duality between an imposing historical envelope and a new contemporary volume, the project creates a temporal bridge that combines the charm of heritage with the hope of the future, in a present respectful of its context. There is a temporal duality, certainly, but also a spatial one, as it was necessary to implant and adapt to the urban fabric. Indeed, on the garden side, there reigns a tranquility bathed in nature, with verdant horizons and a sublime view of Mount Royal and Saint Joseph\u2019s Oratory, while on the courtyard side lies a more active and bustling living area with its traffic (D\u00e9carie highway), shops, and restaurants. To create a harmonious dialogue, a judicious use of materials was fundamental, especially in terms of acoustics where it was necessary to respond to the constraints of the constantly evolving urban context.<\/p>\n<p>In a heritage-minded approach, the Art Deco facade has been completely restored, bringing back the original components. The insulation of the existing masonry walls and plaster is ensured by efficient blowing applied to all retained existing walls. Special attention was paid to the most characteristic elements of the Theatre: the marquee, the Theatre Snowdon sign, and the three horizontal black bands, all preserved and restored identically. A subtle dialogue with the newer, more contemporary volume is established between these two architectures from different eras.<\/p>\n<p>This strong connection between the concerns of our time and the magic of the past has continued to guide the project.
