The typical \u201cshoebox\u201d was erected by the working class in the 1940s and was originally a modest and economical 1-story single-family house.<\/p>\n<p> <\/p>\n<p>In a desire for heritage conservation, the district classified the \u201cshoeboxes\u201d into different categories of interest. In this case, it was mandatory to preserve the existing fa\u00e7ade, but we were allowed to add a second story. To respect the original volume of the shoebox and preserve its heritage values, it was intuitive to propose a set-back second-floor addition. This pronounced recess provides an intimate green terrace on the street side, facing south.<\/p>\n<p> <\/p>\n<p>The project was designed for a couple passionate about architecture and art, whose judicious integration of several paintings was an integral part of the architect’s mandate. Above all, the client’s wish was to create a unique living environment, stimulating and flooded with natural light. Another of the client\u2019s request was to create an oasis of peace within the urban activity of this animated neighborhood.<\/p>\n<p> <\/p>\n<p>The way light penetrates the heart of the living spaces is a reference to the multiple rounded skylights in architect Josep Llu\u00eds Sert’s Miro Museum in Barcelona. A luminous fracture in the roof, capped by a continuous skylight, lets in strong light from the south, which is softly diffused over a curved, white-plastered surface. Thus, like a \u00ab\u00a0light box\u00a0\u00bb used in photography, the all-white project is contained within a black envelope.<\/p>\n<p> <\/p>\n<p>The house is formally organized around a central courtyard delimited on the street side by the shoebox topped by a new floor and on the alley side by a 2-storey addition connected to the front of the house via a glass passageway. In addition, a small pool basin covered by a retractable platform enlivens this exterior living space.<\/p>\n<p> <\/p>\n<p>On the ground floor, within the existing shoebox, we find the living spaces. Then, on the upper floor, we find the night spaces on one side of the luminous breach and the workspaces on the other. The new addition on the alley side accommodates a workshop, a sauna, and a guest room upstairs, all surmounted by a vegetable rooftop garden accessible via a terrace adjoining the main bedroom.<\/p>\n<p> <\/p>\n<p>Circulation between floors is ensured by a central staircase inserted into a transverse gap in the house. The steps and stringers are formed from a continuous fold of steel onto which thin white bars are welded. Topped by the linear skylight, the staircase becomes the main feature of the house; sculptural and light, it allows a transparent reading of the living spaces with a smooth diffusion of light, from the skylight to the first floor of the house.<\/p>\n<p> <\/p>\n<p>Built-in white oak furniture, herringbone oak floors, white lacquered kitchen cabinetry and round ceramic tiles for the main bathroom are all discreet materials that lend the house a peaceful and warm atmosphere. To ensure harmony, a contrast of black and white materials is used, particularly in the ceramics, recalling the duality suggested by the \u00ab\u00a0light box\u00a0\u00bb.<\/p>\n<p> <\/p>\n<p>All exterior facades are clad in black painted steel to emphasize the warm, nuanced brickwork of the existing shoebox. Ce retrait bien marqu\u00e9 permet d\u2019offrir une terrasse v\u00e9g\u00e9tale intime c\u00f4t\u00e9 rue, orient\u00e9e Sud.<\/p>\n<p> <\/p>\n<p>Le projet est con\u00e7u pour un couple passionn\u00e9 d\u2019architecture et d\u2019art, dont l\u2019int\u00e9gration judicieuse de nombreux tableaux faisait partie int\u00e9grante du mandat de l\u2019architecte. Le souhait du client \u00e9tait avant tout de cr\u00e9er un lieu de vie unique, stimulant et submerg\u00e9 de lumi\u00e8re naturelle. Cr\u00e9er une oasis de paix \u00e0 m\u00eame l\u2019activit\u00e9 urbaine de ce quartier grouillant de vie \u00e9tait aussi une requ\u00eate du client.<\/p>\n<p> <\/p>\n<p>La fa\u00e7on dont la luminosit\u00e9 p\u00e9n\u00e8tre au c\u0153ur des espaces de vie est un clin d\u2019\u0153il aux multiples puits de lumi\u00e8re arrondis du mus\u00e9e Miro de l\u2019architecte Josep Llu\u00eds Sert \u00e0 Barcelone. Une faille traversante au niveau du toit, coiff\u00e9e d\u2019un lanterneau continu, laisse p\u00e9n\u00e9trer une lumi\u00e8re forte venant du Sud qui se diffuse doucement sur une surface courbe, pl\u00e2tr\u00e9e en blanc. Ainsi, telle une \u00ab\u00a0bo\u00eete \u00e0 lumi\u00e8re\u00a0\u00bb\u00a0utilis\u00e9e en photographie, le projet tout de blanc est contenu dans une enveloppe noire.<\/p>\n<p> <\/p>\n<p>La maison est formellement organis\u00e9e autour d\u2019une cour int\u00e9rieure d\u00e9limit\u00e9e c\u00f4t\u00e9 rue par le \u00ab\u00a0shoebox\u00a0\u00bb recevant un nouvel \u00e9tage et du c\u00f4t\u00e9 ruelle, par un ajout de 2 \u00e9tages reli\u00e9 \u00e0 l\u2019avant via un passage vitr\u00e9. De plus, un petit bassin d\u2019eau recouvert d\u2019une plateforme r\u00e9tractable anime cet espace de vie ext\u00e9rieur.<\/p>\n<p> <\/p>\n<p>On retrouve au rez-de-chauss\u00e9e, \u00e0 m\u00eame les limites du \u00ab\u00a0shoebox\u00a0\u00bb existant, les espaces de vie. Puis, \u00e0 l\u2019\u00e9tage, s\u00e9par\u00e9e par la faille de lumi\u00e8re, on retrouve les espaces de nuit\u00a0d\u2019un c\u00f4t\u00e9 et les espaces de travail de l\u2019autre. Le nouvel ajout, c\u00f4t\u00e9 ruelle, abrite un atelier, un sauna ainsi qu\u2019une pi\u00e8ce d\u2019invit\u00e9s \u00e0 l\u2019\u00e9tage, le tout surmont\u00e9 d\u2019un potager en toiture qui est accessible par une terrasse attenante \u00e0 la chambre principale.<\/p>\n<p> <\/p>\n<p>La circulation entre les \u00e9tages se fait par un escalier central ins\u00e9r\u00e9 dans une br\u00e8che transversale au niveau du plancher et de la toiture de la maison. Les marches et les limons sont form\u00e9s d\u2019un pliage d\u2019acier continu sur lesquels sont soud\u00e9s de fins barreaux peints en blanc. Surmont\u00e9 d\u2019un puits de lumi\u00e8re lin\u00e9aire, l\u2019escalier devient l\u2019\u00e9l\u00e9ment phare de la maison ; sculptural et l\u00e9ger, il permet une lecture toute en transparence des espaces de vie avec une meilleure diffusion de la lumi\u00e8re, du lanterneau jusqu\u2019au rez-de-chauss\u00e9e de la maison.<\/p>\n<p> <\/p>\n<p>Le mobilier int\u00e9gr\u00e9 en ch\u00eane blanc, les planchers de ch\u00eane en chevrons, les armoires de cuisine laqu\u00e9es en blanc et la c\u00e9ramique ronde pour la salle de bain principale sont tous des mat\u00e9riaux discrets qui conc\u00e8dent \u00e0 la maison une atmosph\u00e8re paisible et chaleureuse. Afin d\u2019assurer une harmonie, un contraste de mat\u00e9riaux noirs et blancs est utilis\u00e9, notamment dans les c\u00e9ramiques, rappelant ainsi la dualit\u00e9 que propose la \u00ab\u00a0bo\u00eete \u00e0 lumi\u00e8re\u00a0\u00bb.<\/p>\n<p> <\/p>\n<p>L\u2019ensemble des fa\u00e7ades ext\u00e9rieures est habill\u00e9 d\u2019un rev\u00eatement en acier peint noir afin de mettre en \u00e9vidence les briques nuanc\u00e9es et chaudes du \u00ab\u00a0shoebox\u00a0\u00bb existant. Au niveau de la cour int\u00e9rieure, des lames en acier peint en noir sont appliqu\u00e9es sur la surface des meneaux des fen\u00eatres afin de cr\u00e9er un jeu de profondeur et d\u2019ombrages selon le parcours du soleil, tout en assurant une certaine intimit\u00e9 vis-\u00e0-vis des voisins adjacents.<\/p>\n","en":"<p>Located in the district of Rosemont-Petite-Patrie, near P\u00e8re Marquette Park, the project consists in the renovation and expansion of a \u201cshoebox\u201d. The typical \u201cshoebox\u201d was erected by the working class in the 1940s and was originally a modest and economical 1-story single-family house.<\/p>\n<p> <\/p>\n<p>In a desire for heritage conservation, the district classified the \u201cshoeboxes\u201d into different categories of interest. In this case, it was mandatory to preserve the existing fa\u00e7ade, but we were allowed to add a second story. To respect the original volume of the shoebox and preserve its heritage values, it was intuitive to propose a set-back second-floor addition. This pronounced recess provides an intimate green terrace on the street side, facing south.<\/p>\n<p> <\/p>\n<p>The project was designed for a couple passionate about architecture and art, whose judicious integration of several paintings was an integral part of the architect’s mandate. Above all, the client’s wish was to create a unique living environment, stimulating and flooded with natural light. Another of the client\u2019s request was to create an oasis of peace within the urban activity of this animated neighborhood.<\/p>\n<p> <\/p>\n<p>The way light penetrates the heart of the living spaces is a reference to the multiple rounded skylights in architect Josep Llu\u00eds Sert’s Miro Museum in Barcelona. A luminous fracture in the roof, capped by a continuous skylight, lets in strong light from the south, which is softly diffused over a curved, white-plastered surface. Thus, like a \u00ab\u00a0light box\u00a0\u00bb used in photography, the all-white project is contained within a black envelope.<\/p>\n<p> <\/p>\n<p>The house is formally organized around a central courtyard delimited on the street side by the shoebox topped by a new floor and on the alley side by a 2-storey addition connected to the front of the house via a glass passageway. In addition, a small pool basin covered by a retractable platform enlivens this exterior living space.<\/p>\n<p> <\/p>\n<p>On the ground floor, within the existing shoebox, we find the living spaces. Then, on the upper floor, we find the night spaces on one side of the luminous breach and the workspaces on the other. The new addition on the alley side accommodates a workshop, a sauna, and a guest room upstairs, all surmounted by a vegetable rooftop garden accessible via a terrace adjoining the main bedroom.<\/p>\n<p> <\/p>\n<p>Circulation between floors is ensured by a central staircase inserted into a transverse gap in the house. The steps and stringers are formed from a continuous fold of steel onto which thin white bars are welded. Topped by the linear skylight, the staircase becomes the main feature of the house; sculptural and light, it allows a transparent reading of the living spaces with a smooth diffusion of light, from the skylight to the first floor of the house.<\/p>\n<p> <\/p>\n<p>Built-in white oak furniture, herringbone oak floors, white lacquered kitchen cabinetry and round ceramic tiles for the main bathroom are all discreet materials that lend the house a peaceful and warm atmosphere. To ensure harmony, a contrast of black and white materials is used, particularly in the ceramics, recalling the duality suggested by the \u00ab\u00a0light box\u00a0\u00bb.<\/p>\n<p> <\/p>\n<p>All exterior facades are clad in black painted steel to emphasize the warm, nuanced brickwork of the existing shoebox.
