Carried out with great care and time by all those involved, the project was an opportunity to reflect on the ecological impact of the elements added. Durable, sober materials were chosen to withstand the decades and optimize the use of resources over time. The brief was to convert office space back into a residence and add a roof terrace. Our approach takes advantage of the existing building’s assets to ensure a smooth, sustainable integration into the surrounding heritage context.

.

The project is located on Rue des Grisons, in the heart of the heritage site of Old Quebec, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. This location offers a very rich context, but poses a major challenge: the lot occupied by the building, right in the heart of the dense urban fabric of the old town, is built over in its entirety. This makes access to a conventional private outdoor space impossible. Yet this is an essential need for the future occupants of the site. It’s clear, then, that the courtyard will have to be on the roof, but it will have to be located in a way that respects the highly sensitive context.

.

Use what’s there

After a rigorous study of views of the building and a meticulous analysis of the existing structure and envelope, ultralocal architects, assisted by MA-TH structural consultants, propose a solution that takes advantage of the building’s very characteristics: the voluminous ventilated roof will be replaced, the terrace will be recessed behind the stone parapets and the added room will be clad in metal cladding, in the manner of the roofs in the surrounding area.

This design makes the intervention virtually invisible from the surrounding streets, preserving the appearance of the original building and its relationship with the heritage site. By using the masonry walls of the attic as railings for the terrace in this way, we ensure the safety and privacy of the occupants and conceal the terrace without adding extra materials. And of course, it also provides privileged access to the sun and soothing panoramic views of the river and neighborhood.

This is the idea that enabled the future occupants to project themselves into this house and put the effort into restoring it and ensuring its longevity. It’s a strategy that makes it possible to envisage the requalification of Old Quebec as a living environment and not just as a heritage memory. It’s also the idea that defines our general approach going forward: we’ll bring forward what’s there to create a living environment in continuity with the environment; we’ll pursue the building’s expression through sensitive and delicate interventions.

An experience centered on materiality

The interior spaces and ambiences rely on a continuum of textures, shapes and colors to build links with existing materials and accompany inhabitants in the movements of everyday life. The imperfections of solid masonry walls are highlighted in a dialogue with the patina of new materials. The added materials are designed to live and evolve. The brass of the countertops will gradually oxidize and the woodwork of the staircase will tarnish. This approach ensures that elements that have lived are preserved, while added elements continue to evolve, enriching the aesthetics and soul of the space.

The colors are chosen according to a warm palette linking old brick and maple joinery. Each element has its own color, adding finesse to the composition; steel structure, wood structure, partitions and cabinetry are all brought together in a delicate tone-on-tone.

Discreet textures are used to give the space its soul.

Discreet textures further add to the depth of the experience. Like brick with its traces of plaster, limewash paint accentuates the way the new curved shapes catch the light. The surface of the kitchen pedestals is finely fluted, drawing the eye to the texture of bleached wood.

The shapes speak to movement and bodies. Rounded edges diffuse light, link spaces together and gather guests around the island. The bespoke profile and sculptural path of the handrail invite touch. Its ergonomic design welcomes the hand, and its curved line guides us from the floor to the terrace. In this house, materials coexist to create an experience evocative of calm and gentleness. Contemporary intervention asserts itself in a living relationship with heritage.

A living materiality for the durability of the building and the environment

The project incorporates ecological design principles right into its relationship with heritage, materiality and volumetry. Firstly, the transformation of the building and the addition of a terrace consolidate a residential function in a dense urban environment well served by active and public transport. Wherever possible, materials with a low carbon footprint are used: solid wood structure as much as light framing, wood finishes and floors, and even insulation from wood fibers. In keeping with passive architecture, the added room on the roof, with its large sliding door to the south, serves as much to capture natural light and warmth from the sun as to evacuate heat in summer by creating a chimney effect throughout the house.

.

But also, by magnifying the imperfections of the existing and implementing materials that gain depth over time, the project puts forward a vision of materiality that ensures the building’s longevity and reduces its ecological impact. As many existing elements as possible are preserved and enhanced: the masonry and floor structures, all exterior ornamentation and the wooden windows. Interiors, already altered by the past, are fitted out with materials that will live, age and last, such as wood floors that will accept wear and tear, or brass countertops that will be adorned with the marks of hands and meals. So, rather than relying on finishes that must remain flawless or risk being replaced, we rely on beauty in patina. This allows us to weave the intervention through the built heritage in place, and lay the foundations for their co-evolution in the future. It’s an experiential, patrimonial and ecological vision of materiality. Materials will retain their relevance even when worn, limiting their environmental impact over their life cycle.

Expertise and experience

This project is the culmination of ideas informed by expertise from all disciplines.
