While other exhibitions of McQueen\u2019s work mythologize the designer, it was our goal to offer a rare glimpse into the life and mind of McQueen and introduce one of the twentieth century\u2019s great, but lesser-known, photographers, Ann Ray. Through Ray\u2019s photographs, a story of McQueen emerges that only she can tell: that of a singularly private artist who drew support and inspiration from an intimate circle of friends and muses. As a design solution to this challenge, we developed mobile walls that were custom built and function to communicate the conceptual and physical interaction between garments and photos, reflecting the symbiotic relationship between the fashion designer and photographer. Cutouts in sections of the temporary walls allow for garments to be inset, a display technique that echoes the wall mounting of the photographs and underscores their artistry. The curving, meandering shape of the walls is suggestive of the enduring relationship between Ray and McQueen, while also guiding the attendees of the exhibition as they navigate the physical space of the exhibition layout.
