bijou patrimonial et identitaire. <\/strong>Les serres patrimoniales de Westmount datent de 1927 et sont parmi les plus beaux exemples de verri\u00e8re victorienne en Am\u00e9rique. Implant\u00e9es dans le parc Westmount, les serres sont adjacentes \u00e0 la biblioth\u00e8que ainsi qu\u2019au centre communautaire Victoria Hall. \u00c0 la suite des chutes de divers panneaux de la verri\u00e8re, les serres furent ferm\u00e9es aux usagers en 2015 pour des raisons de s\u00e9curit\u00e9. Plusieurs \u00e9l\u00e9ments de la structure de bois, d\u2019acier et de verre s\u2019\u00e9taient alors s\u00e9rieusement d\u00e9t\u00e9rior\u00e9s, suscitant sa remise en question. L\u2019\u00e9difice s\u2019\u00e9tait cependant bien implant\u00e9 dans la communaut\u00e9 \u2013 un des v\u00e9ritablement beaux lieux identitaires de la municipalit\u00e9. Ainsi, notre projet de restauration visait \u00e0 restituer cet espace significatif auquel les citoyens sont tr\u00e8s attach\u00e9s. Les interventions se sont effectu\u00e9es dans le souci du d\u00e9tail, de mise en valeur saisonni\u00e8re des floraisons et dans un esprit d\u2019intervention minimaliste. Le concept d\u2019am\u00e9nagement adresse les pr\u00e9occupations d\u2019accessibilit\u00e9 du client, tout en d\u00e9veloppant un circuit de d\u00e9couverte. La nouvelle promenade se prolonge tel un quai, flottant au-dessus des plantations.<\/p>\n<p><strong>L\u2019int\u00e9r\u00eat du syst\u00e8me constructif.<\/strong> L\u2019\u00e9difice, aussi connu comme \u00ab le Conservatoire \u00bb ou \u00ab Palm House \u00bb, est l\u2019oeuvre de Lord and Burnham, entreprise fond\u00e9e en 1899 qui fait sa marque avec des serres ornementales de style victorien tardif, dont plusieurs sont parmi les plus prestigieuses du continent. Au Canada, ils sont les constructeurs des serres du Jardin botanique de Montr\u00e9al, des serres de Rideau Hall et de la serre tropicale de la Ferme\u2010Exp\u00e9rimentale\u2010Centrale \u00e0 Ottawa. Les serres de Westmount sont t\u00e9moins d\u2019une \u00e9poque et d\u2019un savoir\u2010faire que ce projet perp\u00e9tue.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Entre l\u2019ornementation et la structure industrielle. <\/strong>L\u2019architecture y est soign\u00e9e et une attention est port\u00e9e \u00e0 chaque d\u00e9tail. En premier lieu, les jonctions toit\/mur en courbe sont typiques. Au-del\u00e0 de l\u2019esth\u00e9tisme, cette courbe g\u00e8re la grande condensation pr\u00e9sente dans une serre, en favorisant le mouvement d\u2019air et en \u00e9vitant une accumulation d\u2019eau qui se forme \u00e0 la base des verri\u00e8res \u00e0 angle. Dans notre climat, cette courbe \u00e9vite toute accumulation de neige et de glace. La signature L &amp; B est \u00e9galement reconnaissable par ses divers \u00e9l\u00e9ments ornementaux inspir\u00e9s de l\u2019architecture victorienne, tels que les marquises d\u2019entr\u00e9e avec corniches et les boiseries aux pignons des toits. La forme \u00e9troite et particuli\u00e8re des meneaux de bois, ainsi que le verre pos\u00e9 en \u00e9cailles optimisent l\u2019entr\u00e9e de la lumi\u00e8re naturelle.<\/p>\n<p><em>\u00a0<\/em><strong>Adaptation \u00e0 la programmation et accessibilit\u00e9<\/strong>. Les orientations \u00e9co\u00e9nerg\u00e9tiques du b\u00e2timent ont \u00e9t\u00e9 relev\u00e9es par nos ing\u00e9nieurs avec de nouveaux \u00e9quipements int\u00e9gr\u00e9s, tels que thermopompes et chaudi\u00e8re en redondance, planchers radiants et syst\u00e8me sp\u00e9cialis\u00e9 de brumisation.<\/p>\n","en":"<p><strong>Perpetuating the Genius Loci. <\/strong>An emblematic element of the identity of Westmount dating from 1927, the Palmhouse or Westmount Conservatory is one of the finest examples of Victorian greenhouse construction in North America. The restoration of this seriously deteriorated heritage structure was realized with a high level of craftmanship: structural elements, assemblies, building fabric, and details were all respectful of the original structure. The project also re-examines the plantation basins, integrating them within a new interpretation circuit.<\/p>\n<p>The attachment of Westmount residents to this unique historic building was a key element of the restoration strategy. \u00a0The interventions were carried out with attention to detail, seasonal enhancement of blooms, and in a spirit of minimalist intervention. The new layout of the conservatory interior offers a unique garden promenade, addresses the client&#8217;s accessibility concerns, and extends like a quay, floating above the plantations.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The interest of the constructive system.<\/strong> The building is the work of Lord &amp; Burnham, a company founded in 1899 which made its mark with ornamental Victorian glasshouses, many of which are among the most prestigious in North America. \u00a0In Canada, Lord &amp; Burnham glasshouses include the Montreal Botanical Garden, the greenhouses of Rideau Hall and the tropical greenhouse of the Central Experimental Farm in Ottawa. The Westmount greenhouses bear witness to an era and a know-how that this restoration project perpetuates.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Between ornamentation and industrial structure.<\/strong> The architecture of the Conservatory is economical in means and attention is paid to every detail. \u00a0Curved roof to wall junctions are typical. \u00a0Beyond their aesthetic appeal, these curves manage the condensation present in a greenhouse, favoring the movement of air and preventing the accumulation of water which forms at the base of angled canopies. \u00a0As an adaptation to northern climates, these curves also prevent the accumulation of snow and ice. The Lord &amp; Burnham signature is also recognizable in various ornamental elements inspired by Victorian architecture, such as the decorative entrance canopies and the detailed woodwork of roof gables. \u00a0The narrow and particular shape of the wooden mullions, as well as the glass laid in scales, optimize the entry of natural light.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Adaptation to programming and accessibility.<\/strong> The program of the restored Conservatory distinguishes itself from the more specialized vocation of a utilitarian greenhouse in its accommodation of new uses which have developed over time: spaces for meetings, events, interpretative lectures, musical recitals, and wedding photos.
