Saint-Dominique est un village o\u00f9 les citoyens sont tr\u00e8s impliqu\u00e9s et unis, c\u2019est pourquoi le projet a consist\u00e9 au d\u00e9veloppement d\u2019un mod\u00e8le novateur de cofinancement et de gestion participative de la municipalit\u00e9, du centre de service scolaire de Saint-Hyacinthe et du minist\u00e8re de l\u2019\u00c9ducation du Qu\u00e9bec. Ce projet offre \u00e0 la population ainsi qu\u2019aux \u00e9l\u00e8ves de l\u2019\u00e9cole une biblioth\u00e8que moderne et accueillante, un gymnase fonctionnel ainsi qu\u2019une salle polyvalente permettant d\u2019organiser une panoplie d\u2019activit\u00e9s de toutes sortes. Cet agrandissement vient \u00e9galement combler un manque de locaux de classes et moderniser en partie ses installations vieillissantes.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Une int\u00e9gration en contraste \u2013 <\/strong>L\u2019architecture de cet agrandissement est d\u2019expression moderne dont le style contraste avec l\u2019\u00e9cole existante par ses volumes et ses mat\u00e9riaux. Le nouvel agrandissement, quant \u00e0 lui, a \u00e9t\u00e9 joint \u00e0 partir d\u2019un escalier non conforme de la portion 1969. Afin de cr\u00e9er un corridor fluide entre les deux b\u00e2timents, l\u2019escalier a \u00e9t\u00e9 d\u00e9moli et reconstruit adjacent \u00e0 ce corridor.<\/p>\n<p>Tout comme l\u2019\u00e9volution des diff\u00e9rentes phases de construction de l\u2019\u00e9cole, les fa\u00e7ades de l\u2019agrandissement s\u2019int\u00e8grent en contraste avec l\u2019existant. De factures contemporaines, les nouvelles fa\u00e7ades sont faites en briques de couleurs p\u00e2les et fonc\u00e9es, en mur rideau, en rev\u00eatement aluminium imitation bois et en rev\u00eatement en fibro-ciment de couleur blanc lustr\u00e9. Les rev\u00eatements en aluminium imitation bois et en fibro-ciment blanc sont principalement localis\u00e9s sur la fa\u00e7ade principale pour rappeler la chromatique des constructions adjacentes sur la rue Principale. Un mur rideau sur le volume du gymnase vient articuler le volume laissant p\u00e9n\u00e9trer la lumi\u00e8re naturelle au nord et abaisse les limites spatiales entre l\u2019int\u00e9rieur et l\u2019ext\u00e9rieur.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Int\u00e9gration au cadre b\u00e2ti \u2013 <\/strong>En vue d\u2019int\u00e9grer l\u2019agrandissement au paysage villageois environnant, l\u2019intention premi\u00e8re \u00e9tait de cr\u00e9er une fa\u00e7ade pour l\u2019\u00e9cole ainsi que pour la biblioth\u00e8que sur la rue Principale tout en respectant l\u2019\u00e9chelle du cadre b\u00e2ti du secteur. La biblioth\u00e8que a donc \u00e9t\u00e9 con\u00e7ue sur 1 niveau afin de respecter la hauteur des b\u00e2timents \u00e0 proximit\u00e9. Quant \u00e0 la forme et l\u2019inclinaison de la toiture, celle-ci fait le lien entre l\u2019environnement et l\u2019agrandissement en venant att\u00e9nuer la volum\u00e9trie du gymnase qui pour sa part se veut plus imposante. Contemporary in tone, the new facades are made of light and dark colored brick, curtain walling, imitation wood aluminum siding, and glossy white fiber cement siding. The wood imitation aluminum and white fibro-cement cladding are mainly located on the main fa\u00e7ade to recall the chromatic of the adjacent buildings on Main Street. A curtain wall on the gymnasium volume articulates the volume allowing natural light to penetrate to the north and lowers the spatial boundaries between the interior and exterior.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Integration into the Built Environment \u2013 <\/strong>In order to integrate the expansion into the surrounding village landscape, the primary intention was to create a fa\u00e7ade for the school as well as the library on Main Street while respecting the scale of the built environment in the area. The library was therefore designed on one level in order to respect the height of the nearby buildings. As for the shape and slope of the roof, it creates a link between the environment and the expansion by attenuating the volumetry of the gymnasium, which is more imposing. Finally, the use of a wall-to-wall glass wall along the entire length of the gymnasium helps to lighten the presence of this strong volume on the street while creating a perspective on the interior activities taking place there.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Developing a Sense of Belonging \u2013 <\/strong>More than anything else, the architects wanted to make this school an exemplary school, conducive to educational success, designed to allow students and faculty to develop a sense of belonging to their institution, in a safe and healthy context taking into account the physical and societal context. Thus, the Ministry of Education, with the help of architects, has put in place a brand new architectural identity for the new generation of elementary schools in Quebec that is proving to be a source of pride while highlighting Quebec know-how.<\/p>\n<p><strong>This new generation of schools<\/strong> is thus meant to be thought of in such a way as to place the student at the center of concerns and design choices with the goal of supporting educational success. It also designs spaces that adapt to changes in time and use while ensuring a healthy and safe environment for all users. She conceives of the school as a unifying, sustainable and participatory living environment in its community.<\/p>\n<p><strong>A participatory environment in its community \u2013 <\/strong>This is the register of our Rocade Elementary School expansion project in Saint-Dominique. Saint-Dominique is a village where the citizens are very involved and united, which is why the project consisted of the development of an innovative model of co-financing and participatory management of the municipality, the school service center of Saint-Hyacinthe and the Ministry of Education of Quebec. This project offers the population and the students of the school a modern and welcoming library, a functional gymnasium as well as a multipurpose room allowing the organization of a wide range of activities. This expansion also fills a gap in classroom space and partially modernizes its aging facilities.<\/p>\n<p><strong>An integration in contrast \u2013 <\/strong>The architecture of this expansion is of modern expression whose style contrasts with the existing school by its volumes and materials. The new addition, meanwhile, was joined from a non-conforming staircase from the 1969 portion. In order to create a fluid corridor between the two buildings, the staircase was demolished and rebuilt adjacent to this corridor. The connecting corridor allows the expansion to be treated as a separate building under code, due to the inability to install sprinklers because of insufficient water pressure.<\/p>\n<p>Like the evolution of the school\u2019s various construction phases, the expansion\u2019s facades integrate in contrast with the existing. Contemporary in tone, the new facades are made of light and dark colored brick, curtain walling, imitation wood aluminum siding, and glossy white fiber cement siding. The wood imitation aluminum and white fibro-cement cladding are mainly located on the main fa\u00e7ade to recall the chromatic of the adjacent buildings on Main Street. A curtain wall on the gymnasium volume articulates the volume allowing natural light to penetrate to the north and lowers the spatial boundaries between the interior and exterior.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Integration into the Built Environment \u2013 <\/strong>In order to integrate the expansion into the surrounding village landscape, the primary intention was to create a fa\u00e7ade for the school as well as the library on Main Street while respecting the scale of the built environment in the area. The library was therefore designed on one level in order to respect the height of the nearby buildings. As for the shape and slope of the roof, it creates a link between the environment and the expansion by attenuating the volumetry of the gymnasium, which is more imposing. Finally, the use of a wall-to-wall glass wall along the entire length of the gymnasium helps to lighten the presence of this strong volume on the street while creating a perspective on the interior activities taking place there.<\/p>\n<p><strong>A construction favoring local suppliers \u2013 <\/strong>The project was carried out in mixed construction. Steel was used for the gymnasium portion while the library was designed in steel frame with a wood roof. The realization of this expansion in mixed structure facing the existing, which is built in wood, led to a technical challenge highlighting creative details allowing movement and therefore, the sustainability of the work. Several materials, such as foundation stones for the interior classroom were provided by the local quarry.<\/p>\n<p><strong>An energy efficient school \u2013 <\/strong>Finally, this school wants and needed to be eco-responsible, sustainable, supports conceptual, technical, and material choices based on a 75-year life cycle that takes into account the gray energy and layout of materials as well as operability and minimal maintenance in time and money. All of this is intended to ensure the sustainability of the building as well as to reduce energy consumption, limit the waste of drinking water, reduce greenhouse gas emissions and ensure optimal air quality. Cet agrandissement vient \u00e9galement combler un manque de locaux de classes et moderniser en partie ses installations vieillissantes.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Une int\u00e9gration en contraste \u2013 <\/strong>L\u2019architecture de cet agrandissement est d\u2019expression moderne dont le style contraste avec l\u2019\u00e9cole existante par ses volumes et ses mat\u00e9riaux. Le nouvel agrandissement, quant \u00e0 lui, a \u00e9t\u00e9 joint \u00e0 partir d\u2019un escalier non conforme de la portion 1969. Afin de cr\u00e9er un corridor fluide entre les deux b\u00e2timents, l\u2019escalier a \u00e9t\u00e9 d\u00e9moli et reconstruit adjacent \u00e0 ce corridor.<\/p>\n<p>Tout comme l\u2019\u00e9volution des diff\u00e9rentes phases de construction de l\u2019\u00e9cole, les fa\u00e7ades de l\u2019agrandissement s\u2019int\u00e8grent en contraste avec l\u2019existant. De factures contemporaines, les nouvelles fa\u00e7ades sont faites en briques de couleurs p\u00e2les et fonc\u00e9es, en mur rideau, en rev\u00eatement aluminium imitation bois et en rev\u00eatement en fibro-ciment de couleur blanc lustr\u00e9. Les rev\u00eatements en aluminium imitation bois et en fibro-ciment blanc sont principalement localis\u00e9s sur la fa\u00e7ade principale pour rappeler la chromatique des constructions adjacentes sur la rue Principale. Un mur rideau sur le volume du gymnase vient articuler le volume laissant p\u00e9n\u00e9trer la lumi\u00e8re naturelle au nord et abaisse les limites spatiales entre l\u2019int\u00e9rieur et l\u2019ext\u00e9rieur.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Int\u00e9gration au cadre b\u00e2ti \u2013 <\/strong>En vue d\u2019int\u00e9grer l\u2019agrandissement au paysage villageois environnant, l\u2019intention premi\u00e8re \u00e9tait de cr\u00e9er une fa\u00e7ade pour l\u2019\u00e9cole ainsi que pour la biblioth\u00e8que sur la rue Principale tout en respectant l\u2019\u00e9chelle du cadre b\u00e2ti du secteur. La biblioth\u00e8que a donc \u00e9t\u00e9 con\u00e7ue sur 1 niveau afin de respecter la hauteur des b\u00e2timents \u00e0 proximit\u00e9. Quant \u00e0 la forme et l\u2019inclinaison de la toiture, celle-ci fait le lien entre l\u2019environnement et l\u2019agrandissement en venant att\u00e9nuer la volum\u00e9trie du gymnase qui pour sa part se veut plus imposante. Enfin, l\u2019utilisation d\u2019une paroi de verre mur \u00e0 mur sur toute la longueur du gymnase permet d\u2019all\u00e9ger la pr\u00e9sence de ce fort volume sur rue tout en cr\u00e9ant une perspective sur les activit\u00e9s int\u00e9rieures s\u2019y d\u00e9roulant.<\/p>\n<p><strong>D\u00e9velopper le sentiment d\u2019appartenance \u2013 <\/strong>Les architectes ont souhait\u00e9 plus que tout faire de cette \u00e9cole une \u00e9cole exemplaire, propice \u00e0 la r\u00e9ussite \u00e9ducative, con\u00e7ue pour permettre aux \u00e9l\u00e8ves et au corps professoral de d\u00e9velopper un sentiment d\u2019appartenance vis-\u00e0-vis de leur \u00e9tablissement, dans un contexte s\u00e9curitaire et sain en tenant compte du contexte physique et soci\u00e9tal.
