existant.<\/p>\n<p>Le b\u00e2timent original a \u00e9t\u00e9 con\u00e7u au d\u00e9but des ann\u00e9es 1950, puis agrandi peu de temps apr\u00e8s, en conservant subtilement le m\u00eame style que l\u2019original. Le nouvel agrandissement est en continuit\u00e9 au b\u00e2timent existant, en se prolongeant dans la cour d\u2019\u00e9cole actuelle. La conception des fa\u00e7ades vient appuyer le contraste des mat\u00e9riaux d\u00e9j\u00e0 pr\u00e9sent sur l\u2019\u00e9cole existante par les solinages rouge vif et de la brique jaune. L\u2019int\u00e9gration du rouge se fait par une d\u00e9clinaison monochromatique rendant le contraste plus doux entre le jaune et le rouge. Cette coloration permet d\u2019accentuer la signal\u00e9tique de la nouvelle entr\u00e9e et du gymnase, tout en offrant une facture architecturale ludique et dynamique \u00e0 l\u2019image des utilisateurs et de l\u2019\u00e9cole de demain. L\u2019utilisation du rev\u00eatement de couleur dor\u00e9\/beige reprend la teinte de la brique existante avec une modulation plus allong\u00e9e et une l\u00e9g\u00e8re variation dans la couleur, offrant une certaine texture. Le nouvel agrandissement, de facture moderne, permet la mise en valeur des caract\u00e9ristiques propres de l\u2019\u00e9cole existante.<\/p>\n<p>La conception de l\u2019agrandissement de l\u2019\u00e9cole a \u00e9t\u00e9 planifi\u00e9e de mani\u00e8re \u00e0 permettre facilement l\u2019utilisation des espaces sportifs par la communaut\u00e9 en dehors des heures de classe.\u00a0 Les circulations, contr\u00f4les d\u2019acc\u00e8s et locaux de services permettent la mutualisation du bloc sportif aux citoyens de quartier. Ainsi, par la localisation de portes s\u00e9curis\u00e9es, de liens directs vestiaires\/gymnase\/entr\u00e9es, ces espaces peuvent facilement \u00eatre isol\u00e9s du reste de l\u2019\u00e9cole et ainsi assurer la s\u00e9curit\u00e9 des lieux hors des heures \u2018\u2019p\u00e9dagogiques\u2019\u2019.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Un maximum de lumi\u00e8re naturelle<\/strong> a \u00e9t\u00e9 pr\u00e9vu dans presque tous les locaux.\u00a0 Les fen\u00eatres du gymnase ont \u00e9t\u00e9 orient\u00e9es majoritairement vers le sud-ouest pour une plus grande luminosit\u00e9, bonifi\u00e9e d\u2019une belle rang\u00e9e d\u2019arbres afin de densifier l\u2019\u00e9cran v\u00e9g\u00e9tal et ainsi d\u2019\u00e9viter l\u2019\u00e9blouissement des jeunes athl\u00e8tes.\u00a0 Le verre color\u00e9 dont les teintes sont agenc\u00e9es aux couleurs int\u00e9rieures cr\u00e9e un environnement stimulant pour les jeunes.\u00a0 Ainsi, m\u00eame si le gymnase est situ\u00e9 au niveau du sous-sol, il est baign\u00e9 de lumi\u00e8re par les baies de mur rideaux situ\u00e9es en partie hautes de ses murs.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Concernant les mat\u00e9riaux<\/strong>, nous avons opt\u00e9 pour l\u2019utilisation du bois dans les zones \u2018\u2019publiques\u2019\u2019 de l\u2019\u00e9cole, pour en faire profiter le plus d\u2019utilisateurs.\u00a0 On en retrouve ainsi au gymnase pour les poutres principales structurales et pour les panneaux muraux acoustiques ainsi que dans les corridors principaux et la biblioth\u00e8que. L\u2019utilisation de plafonds suspendus acoustiques en bois accentue l\u2019encadrement du c\u0153ur de la circulation et rehausse l\u2019ambiance par son aspect chaleureux.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Enfin, le choix des couleurs<\/strong> avait pour but d\u2019apporter une belle dynamique autour des espaces communs, une sensation de confort et de bien-\u00eatre, permettant d\u2019offrir aux enfants un maximum de qui\u00e9tude.\u00a0 Les couleurs ext\u00e9rieures se poursuivent \u00e0 l\u2019int\u00e9rieur pour dynamiser les espaces de vie commune de mani\u00e8re ponctuelle, \u00e0 travers le projet. \u00c0 ces couleurs chaudes s\u2019ajoute une palette de bleu vert permettant un rep\u00e9rage plus facile dans l\u2019\u00e9cole. Les couleurs des alc\u00f4ves situ\u00e9es la biblioth\u00e8que ou dans les couloirs apportent une sensation de confort, de bien-\u00eatre et de relaxation, sentiment recherch\u00e9 permettant d\u2019offrir aux enfants un maximum de qui\u00e9tude.<\/p>\n","en":"<p>Following the exceptional growth of the Marguerite-Bourgeoys School Service Center\\\u2019s clientele, the expansion of Cardinal-L\u00e9ger Elementary School, located in the heart of Montreal\\\u2019s St. Laurent borough, was necessary as was the rearrangement of some of the existing building\\\u2019s space.<\/p>\n<p>The original building was designed in the early 1950s and expanded shortly thereafter, subtly maintaining the same style as the original. The new addition is in continuity with the existing building, extending into the existing schoolyard. The design of the facades supports the contrast of materials already present on the existing school by the bright red flashings and yellow brick. The integration of red is done by a monochromatic variation making the contrast between yellow and red softer. This coloring accentuates the signage of the new entrance and the gym, while providing a playful and dynamic architectural facture in the image of the users and the school of tomorrow. The use of gold\/beige cladding echoes the existing brick with a more elongated modulation and slight variation in color, providing some texture. The new addition is modern in design and allows for the enhancement of the existing school\\\u2019s unique features.<\/p>\n<p>The design of the school addition was planned to easily allow for community use of the athletic spaces outside of school hours. Circulation, access controls and service rooms allow the sharing of the sports block to neighborhood citizens. Thus, through the location of secure doors, direct locker room\/gymnasium\/entrance links, these spaces can easily be isolated from the rest of the school and thus ensure the safety of the premises outside of \\\u2019\\\u2019teaching\\\u2019\\\u2019 hours.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Maximum natural light<\/strong> has been provided in almost every space. The windows of the gym were oriented mostly to the southwest for greater brightness, enhanced with a beautiful row of trees to densify the plant screen and thus avoid glare for young athletes. The colored glass, which matches the interior colors, creates a stimulating environment for the youth. Thus, even though the gym is located at the basement level, it is bathed in light through the curtain wall bays located at the top of its walls.<\/p>\n<p><strong>With regard to the materials<\/strong>, we opted for the use of wood in the \\\u2019\\\u2019public\\\u2019\\\u2019 areas of the school, to benefit as many users as possible. This includes the gymnasium for the main structural beams and acoustic wall panels, as well as the main corridors and library. The use of suspended acoustic wood ceilings accentuates the framing of the circulation core and enhances the ambiance with its warmth.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Finally, the choice of colors<\/strong> was intended to bring a beautiful dynamic around the common spaces, a sense of comfort and well-being, allowing for maximum tranquility for the children. The exterior colors continue inside to energize the common living spaces in a punctual way, throughout the project. To these warm colors is added a palette of blue-green allowing an easier location in the school. Thus, through the location of secure doors, direct locker room\/gymnasium\/entrance links, these spaces can easily be isolated from the rest of the school and thus ensure the safety of the premises outside of \\\u2019\\\u2019teaching\\\u2019\\\u2019 hours.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Maximum natural light<\/strong> has been provided in almost every space. The windows of the gymnasium were oriented mostly to the southwest for greater luminosity, enhanced by a beautiful row of trees to densify the plant screen and thus avoid glare for young athletes. As for the existing palestra (mini gym), it has been converted into a multipurpose room.<\/p>\n<p><strong><u>Integration into the context<\/u><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The school is located at the intersection of Decelles and Gratton streets in Ville Saint-Laurent. The existing school had more than 24 classrooms, some of which were housed in temporary buildings (modular) that were at the end of their useful life. The project is therefore located in a mixed-use sector where residential and institutional buildings are found. The new school, following the expansion, therefore now offers 36 classes and becomes one of the largest elementary schools in the Marguerite-Bourgeoys school service center.<\/p>\n<p>The location of the expansion preserves the buildings\\\u2019 alignment on Gratton Street. The expansion is square in shape and has 3 levels (2 floors and a basement) which minimizes the footprint and creates direct links with the 3 levels of the existing building. The 3-story construction allowed for a large portion of the existing playground to be retained, while minimizing the foundation and roof areas.<\/p>\n<p>The original building was designed in the early 1950s and expanded shortly thereafter, subtly retaining the same style as the original. The new addition is in continuity with the existing building, extending into the existing schoolyard on Gratton Street south of the site. The design of the facades supports the contrast of materials already present on the existing school by the bright red flashings and yellow brick. The integration of red is done by a monochromatic variation making the contrast between yellow and red softer. This coloring accentuates the signage of the new entrance and the gym, while providing a playful and dynamic architectural facture in the image of the users and the school of tomorrow. The use of gold\/beige cladding echoes the tone of the existing brick with a more elongated modulation and slight variation in color, providing some texture. The new addition is modern in design and allows for the enhancement of the existing school\\\u2019s unique features.<\/p>\n<p>The design of the school addition was planned to easily allow for community use of the athletic spaces outside of school hours. Circulation, access controls and service rooms allow the sharing of the sports block to neighborhood citizens. Thus, through the location of secure doors, direct locker room\/gymnasium\/entrance links, these spaces can easily be isolated from the rest of the school and thus ensure the safety of the premises outside of \\\u2019\\\u2019teaching\\\u2019\\\u2019 hours.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Maximum natural light<\/strong> has been provided in almost every space. The windows of the gym were oriented mostly to the southwest for greater brightness, enhanced with a beautiful row of trees to densify the plant screen and thus avoid glare for young athletes. The colored glass, which matches the interior colors, creates a stimulating environment for the youth. Thus, even though the gym is located at the basement level, it is bathed in light through the curtain wall bays located at the top of its walls.<\/p>\n<p><strong>With regard to the materials<\/strong>, we opted for the use of wood in the \\\u2019\\\u2019public\\\u2019\\\u2019 areas of the school, to benefit as many users as possible. This includes the gymnasium for the main structural beams and acoustic wall panels, as well as the main corridors and library. The use of suspended acoustic wood ceilings accentuates the framing of the circulation core and enhances the ambiance with its warmth.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Finally, the choice of colors<\/strong> was intended to bring a beautiful dynamic around the common spaces, a sense of comfort and well-being, allowing for maximum tranquility for the children. The exterior colors continue inside to energize the common living spaces in a punctual way, throughout the project. To these warm colors is added a palette of blue-green allowing an easier location in the school.
